Cash Money
Interview with Baby by Black Dog Bone
From Murder Dog vol 5 #4

How did this deal come together with Universal?
We had met with everybody from Def Jam to Tommy Boy, Columbia--we met with everybody, but we had been fuckin with Universal for like 4 months on this deal.  It ended up bein what we wanted.  We'd been workin with people for 2 years turning shit down, but we're very happy with what we got.  We coulda went soon for less, but we like how everything went down at Universal.
Cash Money Records is a legendary label--you've been selling major units underground independently.
For sure, Cash Money's legendary.  We got a legendary nigga on the label--B.G.--and now we got a legendary group called the Hot Boys--a bunch of legendary niggaz.  The Hot Boys is B.G., Juvenile, Wayne and Turk.  The Big Tymers is me (Baby) and Mannie Fresh.baby
All the music on Cash Money is produced by Mannie Fresh?
All of it.  We've been together for 5 or 6 years, and Fresh has been doin shit.  We ain't never goin outside it.  The day I go outside Mannie must be the day I quit fuckin with this Rap shit.
What inspired you to do Cash Money Records in the first place?
A nigga was tryin to get up off that street life.  We just went at it.  We put our hands down, wiped them off, and we just went for it.  We just kept it real through the ups and downs--years of frustration.  It's been a struggle and the progress.  We lost rappers--rappers came and went, some rappers died.  Lil B.G. just kept it real.  Basically he been livin with me and I kinda growned him in this Rap game, and we just went from there.
Are you re-rerealeasing the entire back catalogue?
Not everything.  We have thirty albums in the catalogue, but we're doin just 5 of them--B.G., Juvenile, Hot Boys and Big Tymers.  That's all we're gonna catalogue through Universal.
What's the first release we're going to see from Cash Money/Universal?
The first release is Big Tymers.  We got 10 new songs on there.  Then Juvenile, then B.G., then Hot Boys.  Big Tymers will be out end of July.
I heard you just had a big party celebrating the deal.
We had a big party at the Super Dome.  It was lovely man.  We was poppin champagne bottles.  Havin fun with the family, the friends, the label mates. We had the Big Tymers and Hot Boys performing. We just had a great time.
Some people are saying Cash Money is going to be the next No Limit.  Is that what you see in the future?
They sayin that. I don't see us as the next No Limit.  I just consider us being the next force.  To each his own.  We just doin our own thing.  P did his thing and that's all gravy.  We're just tryin to do our thing.  We're not competing with nobody.  When I go to sleep I go to sleep with my clique or with a broad, I don't be worrying about the next man.  My thang is to get up here and do my thing and hustle the way I hustle in this Rap game.  We ain't trippin.  Now that we on that level, it's all gravy.
