Lil Scrappy
Interview By Black Dog Bone
From Murder Dog Vol. 11 #1

How did you first connect with Lil Jon?
I was just doin my thing, goin to every high school party, tearin it up. Goin to every college party, every whatever party, tearin it up. I had a buzz out here on the streets. Lil Jon came and saw me perform and it was done. Vince Philips, he’s one of the owners of BME, he actually seen me first. I hooked up with them. I was askin Jon, “Shit when you gonna fuck with Head Bussas?” He was like, “I’m tryin to work on this Trillville shit first, then we gonna work on lil scrappythat.” The same day I asked him I did the song “Head Bussas” right there in front of him and everybody was goin crazy. That’s when Jon was like blown away. He came over and said, “We gonna do this shit now!”  Cause I already had the hood niggaz and everybody crunk about it.
You consider yourself as a Crunk artist?
I’m real Crunk. I got another style of Crunk. I got that same Crunk energy like Lil Jon got, I got the Crunk hooks, I got that same Crunk beats, but I’m a rapper also, so I spit. I spit everyday life shit that’s happenin in my life. If I don’t feel it I can’t rap it.
You’re a Crunk artist, but lyrically you’re more rapping than chanting?
Yeah. I’m off the chain. If anybody’s ever seen my show they know that the crowd goes crazy. That’s why I say I’m the prince. Jon invented it and I just inherited it and keep it goin.
What were you listening to coming up?
I was listenin to Biggie and Tupac, Lil Jon, Too Short, Eightball & MJG, all the gangstaz.  Then Atlanta always been off the chain. Pastor Troy, Sammy Sam, the whole Oomp Camp.  But mostly we just listened to Lil Jon. That’s about all we listened to in the club.
What other artists would you consider Crunk?
Sammy Sam, Baby D. Ying Yang Twinz are Crunk. Even TI got some Crunk in him. Youngbloodz are Crunk too; Youngbloodz are real Crunk.
What neighborhood are you from?
I’m from Zone 3, ATL.
Before you were doing music what were you doing?
I did a lil crazy shit. I did everything everybody else was doin. I used to fight a lot, that’s how I got my name Scrappy.  I used to get in fights all the time. Even if a muthafucka look at me I was swangin.
Why was that?
Cause I didn’t know who was behind me or who was playin, so I’d just be the one to jump it off.
Are you still at it?
I’ll fight for what is right, for what I feel is goin down.
To me Crunk is a whole different form of music from Rap. What do you think?
We got our own music. Hip Hop is Hip Hop, Crunk is Crunk, Bounce is Bounce. But it all comes into one though. All the people in the world, including myself and yourself, we all have times when we stressed out. We just wanna get loose, wild. We tired of lookin at people standing up and wavin our hands all around, “You say hey, I say ho….” Ain’t none of that shit. We just wanna get crazy crunk wild. You wanna knock somebody head, go ahead. Y’all do yo thang. Feel me? Like that “Head Bussas” song is like a stress reliever song. We just get shit poppin. How can you keep a stressed person down?  They gonna go crazy if they stay quiet, so let’s crank it up.
How would you define Crunk in your words?
Crunk is just some energy. It’s a form of get loose, get buck.  Like all day you’re getting stressed out, doin shit you don’t wanna do at the job or in school. Crunk is like a door into another world. Like in my video it shows some kids lookin in the store and the camera just drops and goes straight into a different whole world. And everybody’s goin just crazy crazy crazy. We have mosh pits. We are like a Rap Punk Rock. When I come out on stage it’s like some: I don’ give a fuck, let’s do this shit, get crazy, I don’t care if my shoes fall off, or all my clothes, I’ma jump out in the crowd. If somebody wanna fight, let’s fight. Fuck it! It’s like you forget everything and let it all go loose.  In the system all day they keep you pent up, but when you get Crunk you can do whatever the fuck you want.
Was your album all produced by Lil Jon?
No, I got a producer, the one that did the “Head Bussas” track. His name is Bingo the Dirty South Quaker. He’s from my camp, Crunk Incorporated.
Don’t you have a group also? What’s the story with that?
Crime Mob. It’s that new new, like younger than me. It’s some shit that’s gonna pop out. You got different dimensions of Crunk. Jon got his dimension, me and Trillville got our dimension, Crime Mob got they dimension. Crime Mob got a new CD called Nuck If You Buck comin out on my label, Crunk Incorporated. Then I got my clique, G’$ Up.
What was the main thing that opened the door for you as an artist?
Performin for Lil Jon. That was what got me here right there. That was last Christmas, 2002. It’s been clickin ever since.
