12 O’Clock of Brooklyn Zu
Interview by Black Dog Bone
Continued from Murder Dog Vol. 15 #2
I was surprised to see that you were coming out
with a CD. What made you decide to finally release a full-length album?
It had to do with a lotta things that was goin
on with Dirty before he passed away, you know him goin to jail and shit. We did
have a record deal back in ‘98/’99, but the problems Dirty was goin through,
and then when he died, we were signed up under him and we really couldn’t get
off that contract. We just got out of it now, so I guess it’s the right time.
Everything happens for reasons. As far as Brooklyn Zu, we’ve always been
featuring on songs. Like myself, I’m on the Wu Tang “Iron Flag, and I’m on
GZA’s latest album. We stayed busy, featuring on a lot of different albums, a
lot of soundtracks. Brooklyn Zu never put out a solo record, but we featured on
everything Dirty had to do with.
Things have changed so much since you got
started. You are like pioneers in this.
When we first came out and did Brooklyn Zu we
was real young, we was teenagers. Now we’ve grown a little bit. Plus, now that
Ol’ Dirty’s not here no more, we want to make his name live forever. That’s a
big goal we have right now, keep him around. And bring back good music, the
music of the soul. That’s what we’re gonna bring the people.
What we’re going to hear will be different from
your early stuff?
It’s not different, but it’s more grown up. I don’t know about you, but I’ve
been getting tired of the music now that’s on the radio. I wanna hear real
music again. The music is no good. It’s like artists are just doin it for the
money. They don’t put their heart into it. Brooklyn Zu’s record is outstanding.
We got one of the best verses from RZA in years. GZA’s on there murdering the
tracks. When you hear the record, it’s unbelievable. It’s 19 tracks and all the
skits we got is all ODB. It’s
really a nice album. It took so long for Brooklyn Zu to put out a record,
that’s why we give ‘em 19 songs. And all the songs are so beautiful.
